Ogden wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Where Do Bats Most Often Live?
Most people will never encounter a bat in their life. At least not the kind that has nothing to do with baseball. While there are literally millions of bats across the country, most people will never see or come in contact with one of these animals. However, it would not be surprising if a colony of bats lived within 100 miles of you. This may make you wonder where our bats are most likely to be found?

Looking for a Home
To understand where bats are most likely to be found, one has to consider the sleeping habits of a bat. These animals sleep upside down, clinging to the under surface of a cave, tree branch, or other similar type of surface.

Bats also live in large colonies. In some caves in the southwestern United States, millions of bats have been found to be living in one cage together. This not only provides them a great deal of protection, but also gives them a big advantage when hunting together.

Caves have become one of the most ideal locations for bats. They are dark during the daytime, which is perfect for a bat. These animals do not see very well at all, which is the primary reason why they hunted night. Their incredible hearing and sense of smell gives them a big advantage during the nighttime hours.

They gain that same advantage in caves. These are usually darkened areas, especially the deeper you go into the cave. That gives them a significant advantage over any potential predator.

Where Are There Caves?
If caves are the primary place they like to live, then places where there are caves is the likely location for bats to be found. These are usually found in mountain areas or other rural settings. Deserts, in particular, are a great location for bats. Not only is there a lot of open area for them to find large insects to eat, but the number of predators is greatly reduced as well.

In the mountains, there are a number of small animals that bats will eat, including squirrels, frogs, and other small rodents. Plus, even when there are not caves available, there are a number of tree branches to hang from.

Bats will also look to set up their home in farmhouses and barns. It’s very common in these types of rural settings to find bats hanging from the attic of the farmhouse or from the rafters of the barn.

You’re Not Off the Hook in the City
While it is not a frequent occurrence, there are still many instances where bats have been found in large cities. Skyscrapers and other tall buildings present an appealing living option for a bat. This is especially true if the upper portion of the building is open or has some type of artwork that has been built that allows the animal to hang from it.

These animals can travel up to 50 miles per night, so they can easily get around the city at nighttime and there are plenty of food sources for them. It isn’t often that this occurs, but there are some back colonies that have been found in large cities.
